Where There's a Will...

Tomorrow night, my husband and I are signing our wills.  We've made plans for Finn, or any other future canine member of the family.  We've asked the future caretaker, and he has agreed.  I wonder how many other folks out there have plans like this?  Or have we completely lost our minds?

  1. No you have not it is a very good idea. We co-own our dogs with their breeders and the dogs would go back to them if something should happen to us. It is a bit of security. We also have them as contacts on the dogs' microchips, (again should something happen to us).

  2. Don't worry- your not crazy! In one of my law school classes we briefly discussed wills (I plan on taking an entire class on it next year) and trust me if you love your dog you don't just want it to be left to chance what happens to them. Not crazy, plain smart.

  3. Nope, you haven't lost your minds. I have things in writing that state the welfare of my dogs if I die!

  4. No, not crazy at all. It is something all pet owners need to consider and make proper plans. That's what having and loving a pet is all about.

  5. That is such a great idea. I have made lists and taken pictures of all the kitties that live here. I think about it all the time so you are very smart to make sure that the animals have a place to go. So often they get just put in a shelter and the put to sleep. Take care.

  7. Wow- we have wills but have not made provisions for our hounds. I guess we just assume one of our kids would take them. Making me pause for a moment though.

  8. I think it's a very good idea. We keep putting off writing our wills and we know we should do it. I'm certain my daughter would have Annie without it being written in our wills. I would hate her to go to a rescue and dog forbid be put to sleep. You are very sensible.

  9. You certainly have not lost your minds. If we had a will, we would do similar, I'm sure.

  10. It's an excellent idea..... I know I would want any of american family looking after my boys - they just aren't dog people at all.

  11. Why would you NOT make plans for your family members in your will? We have a 15-year old African Grey Parrot, expected to outlive us by many years. Our 2 sons are jokingly taking dibs on who DOESN'T get him when we're gone.

  13. We actually don't have anyone who will be in a position to care for our dogs when we go, but we did contact the rescue agency, since as part of our contract the dogs are supposed to go back to them should we be unable to continue care. Our will states that money be used to provide placement for the dogs through the rescue.

  14. Nope, not crazy at all. Hubby and I had ours done some years back...I hate to think of it, but the kids would probably have to split up as I doubt anyone could take all of them (12 at the moment).

  15. Hey Finn's Mom!
Wow, that's a great thing to do! My pack would volunteer to take sweet Finn...she's a great furiend. My peeps already agreed to take Frankie & Ernie if necessary...Mamaw and Papaw Pantslegs were a little vague about taking me if needed. Hmmmmm. BWAR HAR HAR

  20. Of course that is not crazy!
It is very important to know someone is going to take good care of us in case that something happens.
    Congratulations!

  22. It is not at all crazy - it's the only way to be sure that your loved pets are re-homed with who you want to care for them. Don't leave it to chance - woofs and licks from Magic xx

  27. hey Finn,

Your humans are very smart, and obviously love you very much to have taken care of you in their Will. That is something my human has been meaning to do for me and the Pack, so this will be yet another reminder that she must do that.

I think is a huge showing of love and responsibility to have their Wills prepared. It shows that they want to make sure you are loved and well cared for if anything, God forbid, should happen to them. So tails wags to your humans for taking care of you!

  28. No you haven't lost your mind, you're being a responsible pet owner. I think this is something many pet owners don't think to do until it's too late. I hear all the time of pets that end up in shelters because their owner passed away and no family member wanted to care for their pet. I was thinking about this very thing a few months ago. Every parent of human children arranges Godparents -- why wouldn't we do the same for our pets? I promptly picked up the phone and asked someone.

  29. Carla and I have made arrangements for our boys as well. It is completely sane and logical.

  30. Sounds totally normal to me. We are lucky in that our grown children would have any pets we owned. No worries, and love, Carol

  31. Mommy says she thinks it is a good idea to make plans for us fur babies. She and daddy are talking about updating their wills too. As my hu-bro and sis are both of age, I am the only one they have to worry about any more. I'll make sure that make arrangements for me when they update. Thanks for the suggestion.

  32. You haven't lost your minds. In fact, you should be proud of yourselves for making sure Finn is taken care of. I need to make more detailed plans. My parents are the only people I trust with my two...
