WTF Food Bowl?!?

We had a tough day yesterday.  Thank you to everyone who left such kind words.

Finn seems to be doing a bit better this morning. She slept really well yesterday and she took her meds just fine. I noticed a funny thing though. When I put her food in her bowl, I put a bit of water in there too, and she wouldn't eat it. So I gave her the food dry out of my hand, and she gobbled it down. WTF with the bowl? With the water? We shall continue with the experimenting of how to get her to eat.  I have washed out the bowl now and hopefully at the next meal this won't be a problem.

When I spoke to the vet about our lab results, I did mention the off-putting feeling I received from the reception staff.  He did say they are aware of it, and they are looking to hire another person to join their practice.  Thank goodness.

On a lighter note, head on over to the Blogville Chronicles today. Our column should be going up! Any more loooooove doctor questions you need answered, feel free to let us know!

  1. I'm glad to hear that Finn is doing better this morning. That is weird about the bowl and water though. Hopefully it's just a fluke and she'll be over it by the next meal. Sometimes when Fred or Gloria aren't feeling well and being sucky that is the only way I can get them to eat, is out of my hand. And of course I do it 'cause I just want to see them eat. :)
Glad to hear you mentioned the situation to the vet. They need to hire more staff to be able to cover emergencies.

  2. We are sending healing purrs to Finn. We hope why ever she isn't eating out of her bowl is solved soon. Although we has to admit that sometimes Fenris refuses to eat unless the Mom hand feeds him.

    Feel better Finn!!!!!!

  5. Mom says it is always best to address a problem like you had with the lead person. We are all happy you got a good response from the vet. Hopefully it will be a wakeup call for them.

Phantom is very picky about his bowl. Sometimes he will only eat from the floor or Mom's hand. Other times the bowl is fine. He also has to have a separate plate for his canned food never will he eat it mixed or just on top of his kibble. Silly and picky boy.

    Have a good weekend.

  7. So glad to hear you sounding more positive today, and that Finn is feeling a bit brighter - well done for mentioning your experience to the vet, think you will feel better for it and hopefully it sounds like they are acting on it/have heard other people say the same thing, and dogs with bowels - think we just like to keep you 2Legs on your toes!

  9. Finn....
Rose recently refused to eat her food. No idea why. I fed her, she "snubbed" it!! So I started crumbling her chewy Milkbones into the dry dog food.... And any treat will do.... So now she eats!! I have a weird dog!! But.... It takes one to know one!! ;op

  10. Glad she seems better! I think when dogs are feeling a bit out of it, sometimes they need extra reassurance in order to feel well enough to eat--so eating out if the bowl doesn't come with enough extra human attention. Just my theory, based on my own struggles in getting shy fosters to eat!

  11. I am sure food out of your hand tastes way better than in the bowl. :) When we are trying to get our dogs to eat we try a few things, chicken broth on the food and/or mixing in canned food with the dry. After Storm's surgery last week I was trying to get her to drink water so I put a tiny bit of chicken broth in the water, then picked it up after she drank. I put some canned food in her dry food too, but she really had no issue eating, just drinking.

Glad Finn is feeling a bit better. It is no fun when animals are sickie.

  12. That's good to know that Finn is feeling better. Hopefully she'll eat out of the bowl for her next meal. Maybe she just likes eating out of your hand? *love*
Good that you gave the feedback to the vet. Hopefully the receptionist will buck up if she wants to keep her job.

  14. This is the calm AFTER the storm. What kind of personality did they hire? That just sounds sooo.... I don't know, I'd rather have my mouth shut on this one.

We are happy Finn is getting better. I guess I should take comfort on the fact that most vet clinics (back here) aren't fully booked as often. Still, that's seriously weird.

  16. I'm glad Finn is better somewhat. I'd consider switching vets, even an emergency happened it'd be hard to get her in

  17. I hope Finn will be like new soon!
I wonder what she thinks about her bowl!
    Hmmm...
Glad the Vet knows about the issues with that person!
    Take care

  18. Maybe she just trusts it from your hand right now while she's not feeling well? I'm sorry the vet's receptionist is such a jerk - I can't understand why some customer-facing people are so incredibly rude, especially when you're in need of their sympathy, not their attitude.

This probably isn't a good time, but I just awarded you the Sunshine Award. Stop by to pick it up, if you're in the mood for it... http://rescuek9.blogspot.com/2012/06/award.html

  19. Whoops! - just read the previous comment and it looks like you have been double-Sunshined! I too have given you the Sunshine Award!

There's probably some obscure rule that allows you to only respond once when you receive it twice in one day. But you should be very flattered!

    Your pal,
    Garth

P.S. - I have a question for your advice column. I think my mom is obsessed with Newfoundlands. She simply LOVES Newfs. Whenever Newfs walk by, she stops and stares. She has friended lots of Newfs using MY facebook page, and she spends hours staring at their photos. What should I do?

  20. So sorry we missed the post about Finn not feeling well. We hope that Finn is much better today.

Oh Vet's.... Just like a hooman Dr. Give me your money!

  22. Oh I sure hope Finn starts feeling better soon and I hope your vet fixes the situation with the receptionist! It's never a good feeling to be in an emergency situation and dealing with someone who doesn't recognize that

  23. We've been a bit out of blogsville over the last few weeks...
Sounds like the same kind of thing that happened to us, but not at the vet this time... one of our big bugs this week had four wheels...
Ah, FINN... get well soon, lots and lots and lots of luvs from Freya Rose Blossom X ----> and another extra special big HUG...
    Luvs X X X

  24. Geez Finn! Sorry to hear you've been a bit under the weather :( Glad you got in to see your vet. Bummer it was such a pain in the patootie! I hear pumpkin (Mom gets it in the can - pure pumpkin, no sugar or anything added) helps with upset tum tums. Odd about the bowl thingy. If it's plastic, sometimes odors can get absorbed into it and make it unpleasant. Besides, more fun eating out of Mom's hand eh? ;) Wishing you well my furiend :)

    Waggin at ya,
    Roo
