More of Seein' the Sites - Building Bits and Pieces

These are neat little architectural elements I photographed over a lunch hour.

I'm actually quite impressed that I was able to focus on the elements and not have anyone walk in front of my photos!

Some of the captions are links to the buildings themselves if you'd like some more info...

48 Wall Street

72 Wall Street

75 Wall Street

55 Wall Street
I fell down the steps after taking this picture.
No bleeding.  Minimal embarrassment.

60 Williams Street

70 Pine Street

Back entrance to my office building!
I'm actually quite proud of myself because some folks turned to see what I was photographing from time to time.  I would like to think for a brief moment they were able to appreciate something pretty in the middle of the hustle and bustle of their day.  I stopped to read a plaque about the financial district put up by the city and a man in a suit stopped behind me and read it too.  Not too busy to learn something!

More of Seein' the Sites - The Skyline

My job has me traveling to various parts of the city to present our outreach programs.
In July, I went to Staten Island, and from the bridge, I could look back on downtown Manhattan, where most of the sites I take you to are located.

The NYC skyline is in the distance in this photo.  The tall buildings on the left of the skyline is the new World Trade Center (It's directly in the middle of this photograph).

The rusted old bridge is in the foreground.  I try not to think about that.
And in between in Brooklyn.

It's the same skyline that I showed you in my last post - I get to walk out of the skyline and look at it when I go out for lunch.

Once my husband asked me if I could see the skyline from my office window.

Glamorous, eh?

So here are some images of me being a part of the downtown skyline.  Enjoy!

Manhattan Dogs

I think

  they think

they've got more swagger than non-Manhattan dogs.

But...

they haven't met us, you know?

*No Manhattan dogs were harmed or insulted in the creation of this blog post*

More of Seein' the Sites

If you're ever in the concrete jungle around lunchtime and you can't find me in my office, I am probably up here.  I love this little building on the pier.  I normally walk up those stairs on the right, and you can see the water in between, it makes me a little jittery!

View to the left, South Street Seaport.
Plenty of tourists and shoppers and kiddies mulling about!

Dirty old boat!

Brooklyn Bridge.  Say hello Brooklyn!

View to the right.  Nothing really special, except
way in the distance in the bridge from Brooklyn to Staten Island.

I'm not the only one who has found this spot!

More of Seein' the Sites

My final destination on the subway is beneath a building which has a cute plaza.  In the station, they've hung old photographs from when the plaza was being built.

I thought it would be nice one sunny day to eat my lunch in the plaza.
I tried the stairs closest to where I worked.  It was blocked.

Then I tried to lap the building, and hopefully the plaza to get in there.  Nope.  I was stopped by "Security."  I was told I wasn't allowed admittance and I couldn't take a picture.

Since I wanted to desperately to show you some art, I remembered right across from where I work is a little sculpture park.  Smile man in the blue shirt.

I love playing tourist.

We'll have some more sites next month!

More of Seein' the Sites

Everyone has such positive responses to my NYC photos.  Since we're entering spring, and that's prime walking weather, that means you all get to see more photos!

So, there are days when I cannot escape that I work near the WTC.  Sometimes I wander around at lunch time, and I am reminded that this tragedy happened so close to where I work.  One day, I found my way into St. Paul's Chapel on Broadway, and it has a small exhibit inside of it of the memorials which were created for the rescuers that day.

I then wandered into the 9/11 Memorial Preview Center.  The preview center is small, just one room on a crowded street where you can buy some books and things and purchase tickets to the memorial  I saw this photo and was just struck by it.

On to something lighter!  Pretty gardens near the base of...

...the Brooklyn Bridge!

I have no idea what those folks are looking at!

And now, I know this is a little old, but back on last Friday at 7:30am, I received a call from my Momma.  "Don't forget to look outside at 10:30 this morning to see the Space Shuttle go by."

Thanks Mom!

That's it for now!  Maybe some more sites next month!

Seein' the Sites

Okay, okay, I needed a break!  What can I say?  I do feel very refreshed, and before we get into a little of what Finn's been up to, first you have to put up with what I've been up to!

So, when I did my "Where in the World is Finnie's Momma?" contest, some of you said it might be fun to show you some more of the city, so I have been snapping away!

I worked a few days at the Waldorf and this awesome clock is in their main lobby.
I think it's from 1893!

This statue sits in Battery Park.  It once was at the WTC, and it was discovered after 9/11 as having been mangled a bit, and it was moved to the park shortly thereafter.

Lookie what else is right there!  Ferry to the statue anyone?

And this is the Customs House, also just a few blocks away.
I think this Rotunda is just beautiful.

Here's Federal Hall, where George Washington was sworn in as President.

And I just thought this was funny.  This is a telephone building up on 79th Street.
I just love how Verizon slapped a sign on the facade.  Classy.

Ok, so enough about me.  Finnie's been up to no good as well -

Ahar har har!!  We'll get to her.  Looking forward to catching up to all of you too!

And Our Winner is....

Thank you all for playing Where in the World is Finnie's Momma!

We received a lot of great guesses!  Here is the building where my Momma spends all of her working days now...

And here is the map of where she is...she says she's in the Financial District of Manhattan.

Just a hop, skip and a jump away from the South Street Seaport, The World Trade Center, and the Stock Exchange!

And here is a little history of the street, care of Wiki.

Now, Momma wasn't sure if a cat or a doggie owner would win, since she has some followers of both!  So, she is gonna go out and do her shopping for.... a dog because the  winner is....

Lassie and Benji!!

Congrats!  Congrats!  And we had a lot of guesses from folks who were just so close!  I mean, SO CLOSE...all within one or two blocks from the right answer!  I hope everyone had a fun time playing!  I sure had a fun time showing you the sites!

Where in the World is Finnie's Momma? And a Giveaway!

I was truly touched by all of your kinds words when I shared my lay-off saga with you.  I have been working at my new job now for a month, and I thought it would be fun to show you around the area where I am now working.  I love this kind of thing because I just love maps.  I can't explain it.  So, I thought, whoever can guess the closest location to my new job will win a little care package from my gal Finn.

Ok, here we go....

To the west - rebuilding after 9/11

To the west, Zuccotti Park...where are my protestors?  Where's Pip?!!

To the southwest, Trinity Church

To the south, Federal Hall

To the south, Stock Exchange

To the north - My subway stop in the morning.  I get off here so I can get some fresh air and get a little walk in.  On the way home I go in at a stop that is much closer.

To the east - see those buildings in the background - that would be Brooklyn!  And just in front of it is the FDR Drive.

To the northeast, South Street Seaport and Brooklyn Bridge

Ok, so there you go - this is my new working neighborhood.  Can you figure out a street name?  An address?  Give it a whirl.  And, checking out a map is absolutely allowed!  Send your guesses to me at marianne(dot)d(dot)howard@gmail(dot)com by next Friday, January 13th by noon EST and the closest address wins!
